Two shapes of question share this bank. Most ask which of four countries is in Europe; the rest flip the word to NOT and hide one outsider among three Europeans. The flip is where the points leak.
Read the question before the options
The is-in questions are generous: one European country stands among three from other continents, and recognising any of the three as foreign narrows the field. The NOT questions invert the work – Belarus, Slovakia and the Czech Republic are all comfortably European, and the answer is the Kazakhstan standing quietly fourth. Every NOT answer is corrected with the outsider’s real continent, so even a miss leaves a fact behind.
What Europe means in this countries of Europe quiz
Forty-five countries file under Europe in the dataset these questions are drawn from. The list runs from Iceland to Russia – included whole, by the usual convention, though most of its territory lies in Asia – and down to the microstates: Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein and Vatican City all count, and so does Kosovo. What does not count is everything beyond the conventional line: Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan file under Asia here, and so does Cyprus, European Union membership notwithstanding.
The impostors this bank actually uses
The outsiders are chosen to probe different reflexes. Bahrain and Kazakhstan test the eastern line. Belize tests whether a short, faintly familiar name can slide through unexamined – it is in North America. Burundi and Ethiopia are there for anyone skimming the options without placing them, and New Zealand for anyone answering on atmosphere alone: it sits in Oceania, about as far from Europe as the planet allows.
